Who should I send my application to?

Is a classic application folder or an e-mail application preferred?

We accept both options. That said, we believe that sending an application by email is the most practical option for both parties.

What language skills are necessary?

We expect fluency for business purposes in both German and English.

What should my application contain?

Your application should contain a cover letter, your CV and copies of attestations proving that you are qualified for employment with us. Should you be interested in employment as a scientist or doctoral student, please include a list of your publications or publications you have worked on.

Are there any restrictions concerning the attachments to the online applications?

Yes, the size of the attachments should not be more than 10 MB.

Can I send an unsolicited application?

We are always happy to hear that people are interested in us, even if no position has been announced. However, we do recommend that you contact the Human Resources Department before applying; they will be able to provide you with further information.

Can I do an internship or write a master thesis at the Institute?

Our priority is to support doctoral students as part of their doctoral research. If it is possible within the limits of our scientific framework, and if time allows, you are welcome to do an internship as a part of your studies or write your master thesis at the Institute.

What happens to my personal information?

Your application documents will be handled with the most care and confidentiality. In principle, we destroy application documents two months after the completion of the application procedure or, in the case of an unsolicited application, two months after the final decision has been made.

Do I need a visa and residence permit?

On the website of the Federal Foreign Office you can find out if you need a visa to enter Germany. The International Office of the MPI for Brain Research will assist you in getting the required documents. You usually need an invitation letter of the institute when you apply for a visa at the German Embassy in your country of residence. Upon your arrival in Germany the International Office will help you with the formalities necessary to obtain a residence permit from the local authorities.

You will find a wealth of information on the website of the German Federal Foreign Office. You can also use the Max Planck PhD Network site, which has many good interviews with doctoral students, and a number of tips and links to other informative websites.
