Research and Animal Studies

Research and Animal Studies

Our goal at the institute is to understand the structure, development, function, and evolution of the brain. In this pursuit, we continue to rely on animal research - now and likely in the future. We aim to provide a comprehensive overview of our work with animals, including the inevitable ethical considerations.

Why Animal experiments?
Animal experiments are an essential and integral part of biomedical research. They allow us to understand fundamental biological processes and drive the development of new therapies. Major medical breakthroughs and treatments would not have been possible without animal research. At the same time, we recognize our special responsibility and are committed to minimizing the use of animals and complementing it with alternative methods. more
Animal experiments at our institute
Our Institute conducts animal experiments only when no other scientifically accepted methods are available to answer the research questions. Each experiment is supervised by an interdisciplinary team of scientists, veterinarians, and animal caretakers. more
Animal Husbandry
Animal welfare and husbandry is fundamental to the quality and relevance of our research. Our animals are housed to the highest standards to ensure their needs are met. We have state-of-the-art facilities with regular internal and external inspections to maintain our high standards. Our goal is to ensure well-being of our animals and to provide them with an environment that meets their species-specific needs. more
Animal Welfare
Animal welfare is a priority for us. We strictly adhere to all legal requirements and ethical guidelines, not just because it is required, but because we believe it is the right thing to do. Each of our studies is carefully planned and undergoes a rigorous approval process. We are actively involved in the development of alternatives to animal experiments and support research into non-animal methods. more
Our Team
Our dedicated team consists of experienced researchers, veterinarians and animal care professionals who are passionate about advancing science while maintaining the highest standards of animal welfare. We continually invest in the training and well-being of our staff to create a work environment characterized by respect and professionalism. more
Communication
Open and transparent communication is key to building understanding and trust in our research. We regularly share our results and achievements through press releases, scientific publications and public events to ensure that our work is understandable and accessible. We value feedback from the public and the scientific community to help us continually learn and improve. more
