100 years of MPI for Brain Research

In 2014, the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research celebrated its 100 years anniversary. We looked back at the interesting, but also tragic history of the MPI and its predessor, the Kaiser Wilhelm Institute for Brain Research, and full of confidence, we look to the future for another successful and exciting 100 years of brain research in our new Institute building at the Natural Sciences Campus in Frankfurt-Riedberg.

Activities included:

  • The official opening of the Max Planck Institute for Brain Research (May 28, 2014) with speakers such as Erin Schuman, Boris Rhein, Herbert Jäckle, Gunter Henn, Heinz Wässle and Wolf Singer.

  • The exhibition 100 years of MPI, minds in motion, features five stations, including multimedia, research areas, Frankfurt neuroscience around 1900, women in science, different chapters of the Institute's history and neuroscience equipment such as microscopes and microtomes.The exhibition can be still visited during week days (8.00-18.00 hours).   • The art work Mindscape by the artist Gayle Chong Kwan is shown in the entrance hall. It features a images of the different Institute's buildings and research images.
  • The Institute's history is written down in an anniversary book. There is both an English and German version which can be ordered (15 Euro, including shipping costs in Europe) via  or at the Institute's reception.
  • A scientific symposium "circuits in neuroscience" was organized on September 24 and 25, 2014.
